As we begin a new decade, we take a look back at the past decade of champions. Jimmie Johnson won three (2010, 2013 & 2016) followed by Kyle Busch with two (2015 & 2019) and Tony Stewart (2011), Brad Keslowski (2012), Kevin Harvick (2014), Martin Truex Jr. (2017) and Joey Logano (2018) with one each. Since this is an Olympic year, we thought we would hand out medals for the top three Cup performances. Winning the bronze medal is Kevin Harvick with his first championship and 38 wins which was second most. The silver medal goes to Kyle Busch in a very close contest. Kyle had the most wins at 40 along with his 2 championships. If we were counting all three of the top tier divisions Kyle would win it by a landslide but we are only looking at the Cup series. Jimmie Johnson takes home the gold medal with the most championships at three along with 36 race victories. What will this decade hold? One thing we know is it will be the last year we see Jimmie Johnson competing full time in the series.
Jimmie Johnson has announced his retirement from full-time racing after the 2020 season bringing to a close a very successful career in the top level NASCAR division. He will be looking for a record breaking eighth championship in 2020. He is currently tied with hall of fame drivers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt win seven cup championships.
Congratulations to Kyle Busch for winning his second cup championship.
