The 2024 IMSA SportsCar Championship, also known as the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, marked the 54th racing season sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association. This season saw a significant expansion of its full-time grid across all classes following a change in class structure.
The championship featured several classes:
Grand Touring Prototype (GTP): This flagship class included both Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh) and Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) regulations, allowing for bespoke hybrid designs with freedom in aerodynamics and engine configuration. The champion in this flagship class was the team from Chip Ganassi Racing, driving the Cadillac V-Series.R.
Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2): This class remained without Balance of Performance (BoP) adjustments, featuring two separate chassis for the first time since 2021. The PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports team clinched the championship in this class.
GT Daytona Pro (GTD Pro) and GT Daytona (GTD): These classes continued to showcase competitive racing with a variety of manufacturers. The Corvette Racing team, driving the Chevrolet Corvette C8.R, emerged as the champions in GTD Pro and the Paul Miller Racing team, driving the BMW M4 GT3, secured the championship in the GTD class.
Lamborghini made its debut in the top class with the Lamborghini SC63, adding excitement to the competition. The season also saw the discontinuation of the Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) class, which had been introduced in 2021 to bolster grid size.
The 2024 IMSA SportsCar Championship began at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. This iconic endurance race kicked off the season on January 27-28, 2024. It is one of the most prestigious events in the series, attracting top teams and drivers from around the world. The season finale on October 12, 2024, was held at Road Atlanta with the Motul Petit Le Mans. This 10-hour endurance race is crucial for determining the championship standings and is always a thrilling conclusion to the season.
